About me the Author

My name is Jae. I am currently a college student in my 2nd year. I'm currently an English major hoping to become an English teacher. Since early high school, I've always loved the subject of English. It came very easily to me compared to math and sciences, but surprisingly, I suck at reading. However, I digress. Not only am I a full-time student, but I'm also a full-time worker, working at Burger King, home of the Whopper, where you rule, as we say. I'm a manager and have been there for almost 3 years.

Outside of work and school, I'm honestly very anti-social. I have friends, but don't really go out or talk to them outside of school or work. But I do have one hobby of mine I've gotten into these past few months after the spring semester of 2025. Since late May, I've been going to the gym. At the start of my journey, I weighed 147 and have gone down to 140. It's been a tough journey, but honestly, I have loved it. After forcing myself to go, it just became a habit I hope to keep and continue to use as a stress reliever. I feel that the more I progress, the more it makes me want to continue. Who knows, maybe after this course I'll become a gym influencer in the media.

At the moment I also have an obsession with traveling I’ve only been to a few states (Nevada, California, Utah, Washington, and Colorado) and only 1 other country other than the United States (Canada), but I honestly love it so much but it is a pretty penny to be traveling especially in this economy and being a full time student with many excessive fees such as textbooks and redbulls + snacks on campus.

Now, back to journalism, I have a few media interests that many students share, such as social media. I'm a sucker for TikTok and Instagram reels and watching stupid AI-generated videos of what kind of fruit pet I'd want or of dogs playing volleyball. But I also have a huge interest in reality TV, such as the good old show called Jersey Shore or Bad Girls Club. I started watching these two shows about 3 years ago and have been obsessed with them ever since. With these few interests of mine come a few questions I have for our fellow journalists.

How does the media we consume in our day-to-day lives affect our society's norms?

Is the media consuming our upcoming generations?

How do the messages the media sends out affect groups of people in our society? (such as people of color, different religions, people who are LGBTQ+, people of various shapes/sizes, etc.)

Media has such a huge impact on our society, where honestly, it's now so common to see people attempt a job in social media or try to get on a reality TV show, trying to become the next pop star, and so much more. I have so many questions about media this upcoming semester. I'd like to learn the answers to these questions and what I, as a person in society, can do with media and navigate it safely, and in a way to improve myself in different ways with it.
